RE: skylight in the shower

I installed some snaps in the frame of the dome (those male portion of the snap with a screw on the back side, like some outside windshield covers use), and got a piece of that aluminum colored insulated material at a hardware store. Installed matching female snaps in that stuff, then just snapped it in place. Cuts the light to almost nothing, really blocks heat in the summer, and helps retain heat in the winter...

RE: future workcamper question

We have been volunteering at state and federal facilities for almost five years now. Full hookups (with one exception), no pay (with one minor exception), and minimal hours (again with one exception. The exceptions were all at the same National Park facility). We did one Workamper thing, at a private facility in Wyoming. We now call it a Slavekamper job, 'cuz that is what it was. Long hard hours for hookups in a dirt lot, $7 an hour (with the hookups figured in) for my wife, nothing for me. High school kids hired off the street did the same work my wife did for $12 an hour starting. It will be a long long time before we try a "workamper" thing again, we are gonna stick with the public parks. Our favorite so far are the National Wildlife Refuges. Just spent five months at one, we are going to summer at a WA state park, then go back (to AZ) for the winter at the refuge...

RE: Downtown L.A.

Even if it were in a "good" area, I wouldn't even attempt to drive a small Class C into that place. Think narrow streets and LOTS of traffic...

RE: best rated hitches

"...OldBaldGuy, I have the same hitch and don't have to do all that. I stop, push the manual brake slider on my brake controller, back up to take the pressure off the hitch, get out and flip the handle, get in and hold the brake lever again and pull forward till the hitch stops. Try that and make sure the rails are lubed and it is supposed to work. It makes a noise that scares you the first time when it locks but I have been told this is how to do it..." Thanks. I have tried that, I can't even flip the handle with weight on the hitch...

RE: best rated hitches

Reese. Yeah, right. When we went to a fifthwheel from Class A, we bought P/U and tlr from dealer about 250 miles away. The P/U was not on the lot, the dealer had to get it from another dealer. We had the tlr dealer take the P/U and have a fifthwheel hitch installed for us. Since we got a short bed (long story there), we needed a slider. He had a Reese signature hitch installed for us. After getting home we discovered that, in order to actually make the slider slide, we have to be in a straight line, chock the wheels, drop the landing gear, take the weight off of the hitch, move the lever, raise the gear, then lock the tlr brakes and pull forward to actually slide the hitch. I talked to a guy with a Husky hitch, he said that all he had to do was move the lever and the slider would actually slide. Shudda gotten a non-sliding hitch and a Sidewinder Pin Extender in the first place...

RE: Bad Service at Camping World

We have had nothing but good luck with CW. Back when we drove a Class A, we got a new toad and had them install the hidden brackets on it, in CA. Months later, in Alaska, something came loose, and we lost part of one mounting for a bracket. Had a replacement made locally, them when we got back in the lower 48 with internet access, I sent them an e-mail about the incident. Several e-mails later, and after mailing them a copy of my receipt from AK, I had a brand new bracket (the whole thing, not just the missing parts) installed, and a check in hand for our cost in AK. You can't beat service like that, as far as we are concerned (other than the original bracket loss problem I guess)...

Axle shfting...

We are pretty new at this fifthwheel stuff, just moving there after owning a couple of Class A's. Yesterday I was backing into a site, from the drivers side, and noticed that the front axle of our '07 Open Road 35' has shifted toward the curb side of the tlr a couple of inches! Pull the thing into a straight line and it went back where it belonges. Scared the******outta me! Is this normal, or do we have major problems???

RE: What is the average time spent at a workcamper job location?

With one terrible exception, all of our workamping is volunteer at public facilities (state and fed), and thanks to the rising cost of fuel, we are now staying five or six months at most of our "jobs," up from the original plan of no more than three. And, being full timers, we are taking less of a break between jobs...

RE: Safe place to pull in late night near the I-5 in Huron, CA

Having driven a black and white car up and down I-5 in that area for over 20 years, I am here to tell you that you do not want to go to Huron. Number one, it is about 10 miles off of the freeway, in the direction to nowhere. Kettleman City, 10 miles south of the Huron/SR 269 exit, is not much better. One small RV park there (at least I assume it is still open), but not a real great one. Sommerville, at Jayne Ave, five miles north of the Huron exit, is OK, I lived there once for about six months when the ex and I split. There is a rest area just north of the Huron exit, but it is usually full of trucks by 9pm. Harris Ranch Restaurant/motel, at the SR 198 (east) exit, 15 miles north of SR 269, has a huge parking area you can stay in for free. You can park in the dirt with the trucks, or usually get away with parking in the paved lot between the motel and restaurant. They are very RV friendly there. Pretty good food too, but pricey...

RE: HELP! Towing Capacity Info needed

You should be able to find that info in the owners manual. If you have a diesel, look in the additional diesel engine manual. We bought an '07 GMC last Sep, I found it easily, the dealer didn't even know that the info existed. Go figure...

RE: Opinions on Tailgates

We are probably going to get a V notch, just because it looks like our pinbox could hit the original tailgate if we turn tight with the slider to the rear. And if we are not turning tight, why would we slide the hitch to the rear? Looks like a catch22 to us...

RE: Tire Covers?????

I use a piece of coathanger wire to pull the bungee thru the grommet. That said, a few months ago I installed four brand new ones on the motorhome we had then. We were in Wyoming, a couple of days after I put them on we got some really strong winds while we were away, it ripped three of them off, and they flogged themself to death, since they were still attached to the tire by the cord. So I tossed all four, and will look for something better...
